Child Custody and Visitation

Reaching Agreements that Meet Your Family's Needs in California

Child custody and visitation arrangements usually involve two major decisions. When will the children live with each parent? How will the parents share the decision-making authority for the children? It is usually best for everyone involved if both parents can work together to develop a plan that works for their family, rather than letting a judge make those decisions for them.

Taking a Realistic Approach

California courts look at the best interests of the children. As your lawyer, I will work with you to determine agreements that meet your needs and those of your children. I will listen to your concerns and help you find answers to important questions, such as:

  • Who will the children spend time with each day of the week? When will exchanges take place? We need to think about the entire schedule, including time that you will be at work and the children will be in school.
  • How will decisions be made for the children regarding their school, activities and medical care? Will both parents decide jointly? Will one parent have primary responsibility? We will need to think about the logistics of each option.

It is important to think in terms of concrete daily activities/needs rather than broad categories. After three decades of family law experience, I am able to develop creative solutions for families.

Reaching Positive Solutions

If you and the other parent cannot find ways to communicate with each other, I can put you in contact with a family counselor who can help you develop a custody agreement. The counselors I know are familiar with the court system and will work with you to create a parenting plan for the future.

If your case goes to the court, your future will be in the hands of a judge who does not know you or your situation. That is why I believe that negotiation and settlement are almost always better for families. Sometimes a case does end up in court and I well am qualified to protect your interests in that setting as well.

Sometimes, parents move away or need to modify custody arrangements. I have extensive experience handling child custody modifications and relocations.
